I started boxing professionally in 1977 after a mildly successful amateur career that peaked in 1976 when I reached the semi-finals of the ABA championships. I was the Army and Combined Services lightweight champion too. I boxed 12 times as a pro (won more than I lost) but had to call it a day due to 'hand trouble' the referee kept standing on them!! I began writing for Boxing News in 1979 and still do as a freelancer. I was also a co-founder of and inaugural editor of Boxing Monthly which came to being in 1990. Although unmarried I have lived with Elaine BA (Hons) Fine Art for 20 years. I have two sons Joe a drummer and Max. I have been the Eurosport boxing commentator since May of 1991 and love my job.
